My mother-in-law is on a mission. You'll notice few birds flying around in Japan, however there are TONS of insects... big crunchy ones! Many of these "gai jin" insects have taken out the indigenous insects. Recently, argentine ants have attacked the japanese ants in one of the Japanse port cities. Japanese insects (aside from mosquitoes which are evil worldwide) tend to be pretty slow, peaceful and don't bite.... they're just noisy. Anyhow, my mother-in-law has noticed that the local crickets (I think that's what they are) are gone... they couldn't compete... and she likes the noise they make, so she breeds them by the front door and releases them. Of course, they all die off quickly, but she tries to bring them back into the ecosystem anyhow.

Mariko is helping move the guys from their old terrarium to the new, clean one.

Git in that tank!

They like to eat eggplant. They don't eat much, but they seem to be very happy as there's a whole chorus that got a LOT louder after the cleaning.

Teamwork!

Mariko snuck in to take a picture of me in the nuclear green bath water. They put in different bath salts each night... so one night it's purple, another blue, another pink, tonight green, and so on. Like at the onsen, you've got to be clean before getting into the tub. You're supposed to put the face cloth on your head and it's not supposed to touch the water since the water has to stay clean. Sounds fantastically gross to reuse water like that, but like so many things, you just get used to it. Of course, if you don't want to soak, you can just shower and leave.
Note how deep the tub is. It sits belowthe level of the floor. Japanese bath rooms are wet rooms. The toilet is in another room. Also note the cover for the tub... it folds back.
