Atami no yu

I've discovered that the Japanese are obsessed with hot spring water. Heck, if I grew up with all these thermal bathes in the US I'd love it too. We found this little "yu" outside the train station in lovely Atami. There was a little cold water stream with delicious spring water for drinking or rinsing your hands, and a lot of HOT thermal water for soaking your feet. In Kusatsu two years ago the water was like 115+ degrees.... it was seriously hot (as opposed to this water which is only about 110 degrees). A few days after leaving Kusatsu the bottoms of my feet completely shed leaving fresh soft skin underneath. A little scary at first because it was unexpected, but nice to have soft feet.

My mother-in-law is always in a good mood. She's remarkable.

Behind us was a little machine that sold towels to dry your feet for only 100 yen (less than a buck). We were lucky to make it here when we did b/c they shut down the yu at 4 p.m. (right after we finished). They drained the water so there's only the little stream of cold spring water coming in at night.

There is a little reflexology footbed in the yu. I'm having a DOUTOR Caffellatte... it was just OK tasting, but you're not supposed to bring a drink with you. Gomenasai!
